What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA and AMA approved permanent hair removal method. It works by inserting a very fine needle into each hair follicle, where an electrical current is applied to destroy the hair root and follicle, preventing future hair growth.

Who can get Electrolysis?

Unlike other hair removal methods, it is permanent and works on all hair and skin types. Electrolysis can treat almost anyone with unwanted hair, including people with PCOS, women with postmenopausal hair growth, men who wish to simplify their grooming routines, or people in the transgender community.

How long does a session take?

The duration of each electrolysis treatment session depends on the treatment area and hair density. Smaller areas may take 15 to 30 minutes, while larger areas, such as legs or back, may require longer appointments.

Many clients begin with longer sessions and decrease the length and frequency of sessions as hair reduction progresses. Treatment time also becomes shorter as hair growth slows and follicles weaken.

How many sessions are needed?

The amount of sessions required depends on several factors, including:

  • Hair thickness and density
  • Treatment area size
  • Hormonal influences
  • Consistency of appointments
  • Individual hair growth patterns

Most treatment areas require multiple sessions spread across several months to achieve complete hair removal. Some areas may require maintenance visits depending on hormonal changes or new hair growth.

Why not laser?

Laser is long-term hair reduction, not permanent, and does not work on all hair types. Lighter hairs, such as blond, red, or gray hair, often do not respond positively with laser. Furthermore, darker skin often does not respond to laser either.

Electrolysis can treat ALL hair types. Even for hairs that do respond to laser, laser treatments may not completely clear an area, and at that point electrolysis can be used to clean up the remaining folicles. Unlike laser, electrolysis is permanent.

If you’ve tried laser and were disappointed with the results, electrolysis may be exactly the kind of treatment you need for permanent hair removal.

Why not waxing or tweezing?

Waxing and tweezing can distort hair follicles and stimulate increased hair growth, making it more difficult for electrolysis to effectively treat and remove hair. It is far from permanent and can even increase the hair growth in the areas treated. It is strongly recommended to avoid these methods if you intend to pursue permanent hair removal through electrolysis in the future.

Is electrolysis safe to perform over tattoos?

Generally yes! As long as your tattoo is fully healed, treatment over a tattoo is effectively as safe as non-tattooed skin. Unlike laser hair removal, which has a high risk of damaging the pigment in tattoos, electrolysis is usually safe to perform over tattoos. This is because electrolysis is performed beneath the dermis, where tattoo ink sits.

Is Electrolysis painful?

The Apilus epilator provides an array of modalities, allowing me to work closely with each client to find a gentle treatment that gives great results. I promise to work with you to make each treatment as comfortable as possible.

What do I need to do prior to my first appointment?

  1. Stop shaving the treatment area for 3-5 days: The hairs in the desired treatment area will need to be long enough to be easily grabbed with tweezers. This means stopping shaving or use of any other temporary methods 3-5 days prior to the visit (depending on speed of hair growth).
  2. Hydrate: Try to stay hydrated and avoid caffeine the day of the appointment. Well hydrated skin can make the treatment faster and more comfortable.
  3. Stop using any retinol creams: Retinol can cause skin sensitivity that interacts poorly with the treatment. Stopping the use of these products is required for electrolysis treatment.
